Today is Administrative Professionals Day, though some are intent on turning it into a
full week of secretarial gratitude. According to a post on Black Enterprise, Administrative Professionals Day comes during a week full of special, though unofficial, observances. Yesterday I wrote about Earth Day, but it's also National Small Business Week and Take Your Kids to Work Day is Thursday.
Administrative Professionals Day (aka Secretaries Day, aka Administrative Assistants Day) was started 1952 by savvy public relations practitioner Harry F. Klemfuss of Young & Rubicam, in an effort to draw young women into the field. According to the Wikipedia entry, "Klemfuss promoted the values and importance of the job of administrative assistants."
The Rockford Register Star, a small daily in Illinois, posted a few notes from area businessmen thanking their exceptional office assistants. Perusing the small notes showed not one boss had a male assistant (or the men didn't merit thanks). Coincidently, most notes also mentioned how their assistant was a rock star because she stayed latest, arrived first, and just loved extra duties, all with a big smile. You know, maybe administrative assistant do need a whole week.
