April 22 is Earth Day, an unofficial holiday observed by most of the world. Earth
Day began as a series of grass-roots "teach-ins" about pollution and conservationism in the sixties and since then has evolved into a very corporate and political excuse to blow hot air affair.
Reuters Environmental Correspondent Deborah Zabarenko wrote about the politicization of Earth Day. Zabarenko quoted Senator Obama, who said, "Our leaders in Washington have to put what's right for our planet ahead of what's good for their friends in the energy industry," while campaigning in Pennsylvania.
On the tongue-in-cheek but full of truth front, Washington Post staff writer Hank Stuever wrote a hilarious obituary for Earth Day. The cause of death, "a long but admirable struggle with celebrity piety and corporate baloney, mainly." Also funny but more sad than anything, the government's official website for Earth Day is absolutely aglow with President Bush's wonderful track record on the greenhouse effect and the environment.
Last, but not least, recycle, save water, and DON'T LITTER!
