
"Jerry and Ben started their first Free Cone Day as a thank you to their customers." Free cone day goes back to 1979 and this year, besides being a celebration of freebies,it was also a part of the socially conscious ice-cream makers 30th anniversary.
I've heard about free cone day for several years, I've never made it once to my local "scoop shop" for a serving of my favorite flavor (I can't get enough Neopolitan Dynamite). I tried to make it yesterday so I called the scoop shop in Long Beach, they had a 35 minute wait. Now I love free, and I especially love ice cream, but waiting a half hour for something I already have in my freezer, not to mention the commute, just seemed like a waste of precious gasoline to me.
I shouldn't have been daunted by the idea of a 30 minute wait, according to the official press release "in 2007 Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops gave away more than 1 million free cones worldwide!" Somehow I'm guessing there were plenty of shops with a much longer wait.
