The final 4 teams of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship were finalized today. Known as “March Madness,” since the majority of the games occur during this month, the single elimination tournament has become one of the biggest sporting events of the year.![]()
On March 13, MSNBC.com featured a post from contributor John W. Schoen who asserted March Madness “is surely one of the biggest money-making sporting events.” In the article Schoen quotes Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. According to Swangard, right now the NCAA “owns the sports landscape,” because there's a lack of choices for sports fans. Baseball season hasn't started, the NBA is only just starting to get hot and the NHL may be nonexistent.
In a March 17 post on Sports Illustrated.com the sports magazine said a study by Richard Lapchick, head of the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, concluded “North Carolina was the only school among the four No. 1 seeds [...] that graduated at least 50 percent of its players.”
