Gibson Guitar Corporation announced on Thursday that it is suing retailers that sell “Guitar Hero.” This is only a chapter in the series of lawsuits between the respected guitar maker and Activision (NASDAQ:ATVI) the maker of the popular video game.

Gibson filed the corporate lawsuit late last week against 7 retailers, including Target (NYSE: TGT), for selling the wildly popular video game. A post on Reuters noted sales of “Guitar Hero” have exceeded $1 billion in U.S. dollars since its 2005 debut.

In a separate suit Gibson has filed against Activision for violating patent law. Gibson holds a patent for a “system and method for generating and controlling a simulated musical concert experience.” According to a post on MTVNews.com, "the term 'video game' does not appear in the 5,000-word patent."
