Hi Tori,
I tried a couple of really basic searches, things that I could reasonable predict results. It was hit and miss.
I do think in a few months, after constant use and refinement, the results will be more accurate and useful. Of course the beginning will be hard, socially driven sites are at a disadvantage until they're used.
That said, I don't think it will produce better results than mathematically driven engines. I also don't see the inherent value in search engines being "transparent." The ability for manipulation is just too high, spammers and net hijackers are clever and mutate faster than MSRA.

Hi Tanya,
Great post.
I agree that calling Wikia Search a Google killer is sensationalist.
What do you think of the search engine so far? Have you taken it for a spin?
I have a wiki hosted on wikia so I found out about the new engine relatively early. I took it for a spin but I wasn't impressed. It seems far from even matching Google and probably will be that way for quite awhile.
It is part social search engine, right?
That is really a double edged sword I think because for a social search engine to be useful there needs to be a critical mass of users (a society). But to attract users they need other users (who wants to dance at an empty party?) or they need really great search (like Google), which they don't have yet.
But everyone doubted Wikipedia too, so who knows, right?
