If you’re online for mere moments a day, you’ve probably seen or heard about Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) recent entry into the cell phone software game. Announced on Monday, since then Google’s move has been dissected, covered, analyzed, and, I’m willing to bet, has gamblers sizing up the odds already.
For one of the funniest recaps, I’d recommend you read the summary at CNNmoney.com, where the post’s authors give us a quick glimpse into their heart of hearts in the opening paragraph with this gem:
"a free cell phone software package so the Internet search leader can more easily peddle ads and services to people who aren't in front of a PC."
Don't you just love the word "peddle?" Anyway, the post continues in this vein, peppering the humdrum facts of a piece from the Associated Press with some very transparent cues that they’re a bit nonplussed.
If you prefer your from wire services strictly humdrum, read this post from msnbc. Though the articles contain pretty much the same information the disparate framing means they strike 2 very different cords.
And as an aside, when did it go out of vogue for reporters to cover stories the old fashioned way? By old fashioned I mean writers writing their own story for a newspaper intead of all the papers buying the same story from a newsire and throwing in a few sentences to convince us it's unique.
As a blogger, am I being hypocritical even asking? Can I respect the old guard, be filled with disgust at the media homogeny of today and still embrace new media?
Now back to the job at hand.
The Google “software stack” will be free, Linux-based, available on devices from at least 4 cell phone manufacturers, and could sweep the legs from under other software developers who charge phone makers to install programs.
For a very well written, techie-but still understandable point of view, I like this post from Stephan Shankland at Cnetnews.com.
