October 16 is Bosses Day, or Boss’s Day, National Boss Day, depending on your personal preference. Either way, it’s secular, it’s entirely forgettable, and it seems to serve no purpose other than boosting Hallmark’s coffers.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe good leaders need and deserve the same recognition
and appreciation employees would like to receive, I just don’t think this holiday does that.
On the one hand, if you’ve never expressed gratitude or appreciation for your supervisor it may be because you think they’re doing a horrible job, which would put you squarely in the midst of the 35 percent of employees who said the boss was a poor leader.
And if you’re one of the few people who think their boss is doing a great job and you’ve waited all year to express your gratitude with a measly card and a new Lazy-Susan, shame on you! Hopefully next year you’ll offer a sincere “thank you” or “I appreciate your insert adjective/verb here.”
While I’m on this soap box, thanks Hal, Dan, and Easton! You allow me to write for your network and you certainly didn’t have to bring me on board. You’re flexible and you’re kind. Hope you realize you’re appreciated.
