Starbucks (SBUX) announced yesterday that it is ready to fulfill a promise made long ago to make milk and dairy products that are served in their multitude of shops free of a controversial artifici
al growth hormone used to increase milk production.
According to this MSNBC.com article, Starbucks made this move after being targeted in a campaign by consumer groups critical of the use of the artificial hormone, rBGH. The hormone is given to cows to increase milk production.
They have gone from a supply that is 27 percent free of the hormone to 37 percent since the end of 2006. They haven't said when all of its stores will have milk free of the growth hormone. The areas of the country who are in the 'hormone free' zone are Northern California, New England, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.
They had the best of intentions when they promised to switch to hormone free milk but were quickly faced with the fact that there wasn't a supply of organic milk large enough to accommodate their needs.
In another move to please consumers Starbucks said it was making sure all of its pastries and other foods sold at half of its U.S. outlets would be free of artery-clogging trans fats. The other half the outlets just are out of luck I guess.
