DirecTV (DTV) will unveil the Sat-Go, a mobile satellite
and television system at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today.
The system weighs about 25 pounds and will sell for $1,000 to $1,300 and will go on sale this spring at such unlikely places as Cabela's and advertised in such publications as RV magazine.
The first-run of production will be pretty modest, at about 10,000, which will make this new on-the-go toy pretty pricey too, but the price should come down soon. The monthly subscription fee is the same as adding a box, at $4.99.
The original idea for a mobile satellite system came from Rick Rosner, the creator and producer of such television series as "CHiPs" and "The New Hollywood Squares," according to this NYTimes.com article. He is a self-described television junkie who would lug DirecTV set-top boxes along when he was on location shoots and then rent or buy a satellite dish and attach it to his balcony railing with duct tape.![]()
He took his idea to a friend who was an engineer at DirecTV. They set out to build a mobile satellite TV and eventually produced a prototype that "looked like a big sewing machine."
