Chosen to head up the unit that faces the biggest challenge, that of reducing Google's (GOOG) lead in Internet adverstising, is Susan L. Decker.
Decker was appointed chief financial officer in mid-2000, right before the bottom fell out of the Internet business and Yahoo saw shares lose 90 percent of their value. Decker played a key role in helping reset expectations on Wall Street and within the company.
Some analysts believe that this appointment is one step in the road towards grooming Decker to succeed Terry S. Semel as chief executive. Although she might not have the operational experience no one that has worked with her doubts her ability to fill that role if called upon.
In fact, this NYTimes.com article states that in interviews with nearly a dozen former colleagues, analysts and other people who know Decker all cite her itellect as being very keen.
Her reputation has earned her spots on the board of Pixar Animation Studios, a subsidiary of Disney (DIS), Costco Wholesale (COST) and most recently Intel (INTC).
