Sony (SNE) replaces the so-called "father of the PlayStation" Ken Kutargi, just as they roll out their version of the PlayStation 3, although he will remain as chief executive and also become chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment.
Kazuo Hirai will take over when Sony Corp. sorely is in need of a big hit with their new PlayStation 3 to repair its battered reputation and books. American, Jack Tretton, will take over his position as U.S. gaming business, the first non-Japanese to assume that post.
Tretton is currently executive vice president in the same division, and helped oversee the launch of the PlayStation series in North America. Hirai had this to say about his replacement, “Given his experience and exceptional reputation in the industry, I can think of no better person to assume the helm of the PlayStation brand in the US, Canada and Latin America,” as quoted in this MSNBC.com article.
