JetBlue (JBLU) has announced that they will be removing a row of seats from all 96 of its Airbus 320 planes in order to cut costs and add 4 more inches of leg room to 11 rows.

Currently, in the rows that will be affected, their are 32 inches of pitch - the space from one seatback to another - with most coach sections of major airlines being 31 or 32 inches. Cutting out one row of seats will jump the space up to 36 inches. The rest of the rows in the Airbus 320 are at 34 inches.

Removing the row will drop the passenger capacity from 156 to 150 which will allow JetBlue to operate the flight with just three attentdants instead of the current four, saving about $6 million a year combined with the fuel savings from a lighter plane, even taking into account the lost sales due to fewer seats.
According to this NYTimes.com article JetBlue has no plans to layoff any flight attendants, although they will offer leave with benefits to some current attendants. They intend to keep all current flight attendants fully employed by the end of 2007, if they meet their expected growth.
