The newsroom was shocked as they received the news while they were preparing to cover election returns. Dean Baquet will leave his post Friday and will be replace by James O'Shea, the managing editor of The Chicago Tribune, who will start Monday.
The paper's publisher was fired last month for openly objecting to cuts ordered by the Tribune Company. Mr. Baquet felt the cuts were excessive. Speculation is that the firing had less to do with the dispute over job cuts than it did with his vocal resistance to them.
The new publisher, David Hiller, made a statement to the newsroom saying he didn't expect job cuts and if further cuts were made they could be reached through attrition.
