Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWACQ.PK), working to emerge from bankruptcy, is planning to recall hundreds of furloughed pilots this year and next.
This announcement is good news for pilots since they orginally only planned on calling back 40 to 50 pilots, as reported to the pilots' union in August.
The nation's fifth-largest airline sent letters to as many as 425 pilots seeking to recall them as early as Oct. 10 and it is rumored that another 150 will be called back in the first half of next year. 729 pilots were laid off after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and Northwest reducted service and filed for bankruptcy reorganization in September of 2005.
Business has picked up and airlines are increasing fares for the Holiday season and Northwest's call to add more pilots reflects that.
