Cisco, the world's largest maker of networking equipment such as routers, switches and other devices used to direct traffic and link networks to the Internet, recently acquired Scientific-Atlanta Inc., the world's second-largest cable television box seller, for $6.9 billion. This added $584 million to Cisco's sales.
Quarterly sales for the company, which also produces digital subscriber line and cable broadband equipment, Voice over Internet Protocol telephone service products and network management, were $8.18 billion, compared to $6.55 billion last year.
Emerging markets in such areas as Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, posted increased sales, some up over 40 percent. Cisco is capitalizing on the upgrading of outdated equipment and customers who are addressing the need of greater bandwidth.
