Aetna Inc. (AET) has awarded the University of Michigan a $230,000 grant to fund a school-based program aimed at educating African-American teenagers about depression and the importance of early treatment.
Researchers at the University of Michigan and the non-profit MINDS, Inc. (Mental Illness Needs Discussion Sessions) are working together on a school-based education and awareness program that would aim to defuse the stigma of depression and to educate teenagers on the causes of and available treatments for depression.
The program will be made available to 7th and 8th graders at twelve different middle schools across the state that can show an economically-challenged student population that is at least 60 percent African-American.
