In a marketing approach that hopes to soothe the feelings of a niche market of animal lovers, Whole Foods will begin to offer a line of meat that will carry labels saying "animal compassionate," letting the consumer know that the animals were raised in a humane manner right up until they were slaughtered.
Some terms that apply to animal welfare claims are "free farmed," certified humane," "cage free," and "free range." These meat and egg products can be twice as expensive then products that do not carry such labels.
This labeling trend has cropped up in the restaurant industry too, where some high-end restaurants offer "certified humane" meats. The opinion is that the meat tastes better besides offering a choice for those worried about the animals they eat.
