Approximately 200 employees of a Hialeah Gardens, Fla. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) Super Center walked out in protest against new store policies, rallying outside the store with shouts of "We want justice." The Workers numbered about 200.
This is the first time Wal-Mart has faced a worker-led walk out of this scale. Another first is the agreement by Wal-Mart to change at least one of the practices or policies under disagreement.
Unions have failed to make their way into Wal-Mart with a store in Jonquière, Que., Canada being closed up when the workers voted to unionize, although this wasn't a union organized protest. Two department managers who thought they company had gone too far with certain new policies organized the walk out.
At least one of the practices employees disagree with is the scheduling changes, which have been rolled out in Wal-Mart stores around the country in recent weeks. They seem to follow ideas outlined in an internal document that was leaked last year. In the memo, a Wal-Mart executive said it would find ways to rid its payroll of full-time and unhealthy employees who are more expensive for the company to retain.
