
Starbuck's presence in the big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and even in China's fast-developing hinterland is part of the plan to accelerate investments including tightening control over its China franchises. It bought out the controlling shareholders in the company that operates 62 outlets in Beijing and Tianjin.
The business in Asia differs from the US in that 80 to 90 percent of purchases are consumed in-store, whereas in the US most people order their food and drink to go. The growth in China can be attributed to Starbuck's being a meeting place for the masses in the crowded cities.
