Sony Corp. (SNE) and PlayStation 3 video console and 21 new games are getting ready for the shopping battle that will be waged for the consumers holiday dollars when they go on sale next month.
Rival Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) name was never mentioned in the announcement that stated that PlayStation was superior to the competition but Sony president and chief executive Kazuo Hirai said, "We're going to have to take back control of the console war."
Editor in chief of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Dan Hsu, said that Hirai's presentation clearly was focused on Microsoft, as reported by the NYTimes.com. Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been out for a year ahead of PlayStation 3 and is less expensive as well. Sony hopes its Blu-ray technology will make up for the cost difference.
Sony will have 400,000 consoles ready in North America by Nov. 17 with projection that they will be sold out immediately. The company expects to ship six million consoles total, worldwide, by the end of March.
