The two boys, 17 at the time and now 22, were burned by a 12,500-volt electrical wire in August 2002. The pair, Jeffrey Klein and Brett Birdwell, wanted to see the view from atop the boxcar where the wire that powers the locomotives hung.
Attorneys for Klein and Birdwell argue there should have been warning signs but Amtrak and Norfolk feel the two were old enough to be aware of the dangers.
Klein was awarded $11 million with burns over 75 percent of his body and Birdwell was awarded $588,000 with burns over 18 percent of his body. $12.5 million was awarded in punitive damages.
