Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is getting tough and trying to curb widespread piracy of many of their programs including the Windows operating system and Office suite.
Monday they said they had filed more than 50 lawsuits and other legal actions worldwide against people who bought pirated copies of Microsoft software from auction sites such as eBay.
Revenue in a near saturated market is hurt by illegal distribution of this kind and Microsoft is hoping to curb and recoup with legal action. New versions of Windows and Office, their biggest revenue generators, are due out soon.
The countries where legal actions were filed are the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Korea, Poland, and several other countries.
Microsoft tries to work with auction sites that sell pirated software and only considers legal action against the merchants if they still continue to sell the software after having been alerted by Microsoft.
