The drug seems to work as well as older diabetes drugs but with fewer side effects such as weight gain. The cost of the drug might limit its use, however. It might cost as much as $3 to $6 a day whereas older drugs can cost as little as 50 cents a day.
This new drug works to enhance the body's own ability to lower blood sugar levels in the 20 million Americans who are affected by Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, accounting for about 90 percent to 95 percent of all cases of diabetes.
