In a trend that is sweeping discount retailers, Kohl's Corp. (KSS) is opening an office in New York since finding trendy clothing designers near the company's Midwestern home office has proved difficult.
Kohl's is not alone. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) as well as Sears (SHLD) and Kmart have opened design studios in the city in the last few years. Since the designers weren't coming to the retailers the retailers decided to go the the designers.
For decades, clothing vendors have routinely held back the most fashionable clothes from far-away discount chains, first supplying them to department stores and specialty clothing chains. As a result, stores like Kohl’s, Kmart and Wal-Mart became resigned to selling last season’s trends, year after year.
But with design offices in Manhattan, where trends materialize on the street, discount retailers no longer have to wait for permission from clothing suppliers to carry stylish merchandise, as reported in this NYTimes.com article.
