Intel Corp. (INTC) might be thinking about making a bid for Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), the graphics chip maker.
Just the rumor is enough to have sent Nvidia's stock up 8 percent although analysts believe there is no such deal in the works.
The possibility has been bandied about on the grapevine since July when competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) acquired graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT) for $5.4 billion.
Intel Chairman Craig Barrett was quoted as saying, "We treat investments and things of that sort like fine wine and we never discuss them before their time, so we don’t comment on rumors of that sort,” as reported in this NYTimes.com article.
