Following the latest fashion trend, Coach Inc. (COH) has accused Target Corp. (TGT) of selling a fake Coach handbag.
A similar accusation was made by Fendi S.R.L. against another mega-retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) in June.
Target made a statement in its defense saying, "The Coach product showcased in our store is authentic and legitimate. The lawsuit is without merit. Target has procedures in place to ensure that we do not sell counterfeit products to our guests,” as reported in this MSNBC.com article.
Coach is seeking in excess of $1 million in damages and has also asked for an injunction to stop Target from selling any other items that carry Coach trademarks.
