Boeing Co. 's (BA) outlook to retake the No. 1 spot in the commercial airliner business has hit a snag with the rising costs of its key 787 Dreamliner program.
Chicago-based aerospace company Boeing still expects to deliver the first 787 on schedule in 2008 despite such issues as supplier delays and problems with getting the 787 to pass its weight off within specified limits. These problems would add hundreds of millions of dollars this year and next year to the cost of developing the aircraft.
The initial announcement of problems with the 787 in July and recent disclosures have investors a little worried, pushing the stock down 3.3 percent to $80.86. Wall Street's nervousness can be attributed to the nightmare at Airbus, where top executives lost their jobs with continued delays and hold-ups in the European plane maker's A380 jumbo jet program.
