A federal court jury returned a verdict against insurance company Amerigroup Corp. (AGP), a company that specializes in health care for low-income patients, for $48 million in damages for discriminating against pregnant women.
The amount would be tripled, to $144 million total, under the federal False Claims Act and the Illinois Whistleblower Act. The 12-year old Virginia Beach, Va., company could be looking at more than these damages when revenue of $2.3 billion could be hit with additional penalties.
The company was caught limiting the number of pregnant women enrolled but they have said they had publicly stated they were tyring to reduce the number of third-trimester women signed up to ensure "continuity of care." State officials had even urged the company to do the same.
