Allstate Corp. Insurance Company (ALL) must have its age discrimination case heard by a jury is the ruling of Federal District Judge E. Richard Webber made yesterday.
According to this NYTimes.com article Allstate might have discriminated against older insurance agents when it adopted a plan seven years ago to cut costs and streamline the company's operations.
Allstate has argued for years that the case was groundless and should be dismissed but Judge Webber stated that lawyers for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has presented strong enough evidence of discrimination to warrant a jury's scrutiny. He also stated that Allstate hadn't presented enough evidence to rebut the claim.
In the same article a spokesman for Allstate said that the company's treatment of its agents was appropriate and legal and that they were disappointed with the judge's ruling.
