Wal-Mart Isn't Cheap When It Comes To Political Contributions

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) has contribued more than $222,000 to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and $300,000 to the state's GOP fund and additional contributions to other local politicians, making California the biggest recipient of Wal-Mart's generousity.

As state politicians begin taking on bigger roles in deciding key issues concerning the company's operations, from the local minimum wage and required health-care benefits to zoning for big-box retailers, Wal-Mart has increased its contributions, as reported in this BusinessWeekOnlne article.

In the 2000 election cycle Wal-Mart gave a total of $326,875 but so far this year they have contributes $644,655. The company says it has become necessary to step up its contributions although for years they shunned the practice due to founder Sam Walton's believe that such activities didn't benefit his customers.
