In an attempt to save on costs Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) is switching from polyethylene coffee cups to polyproylene cups and will save $1 million annually. The Dallas-based dicscount airline bought 98.5 million cups in 2005 and is well known for its cost-saving ideas including sending faxes on scrap paper.
The appearance of the cups is the only significant change other than the cost with a slightly cloudier look as opposed to the 'clear' plastic look of the more expensive product.
Southwest was one of the only airlines that remained profitable after the 2001 terrorism attacks. This year they celebrate 35 years of business.
