The NYTimes.com reports that the owner of The New York Post, the News Corporation (NWS-A), has acquired two newspaper groups that have 28 weekly papers primarily serving Queens and Brooklyn, broadening its metropolitan-area presence.
The area they are moving into has previously been dominated by The Daily News, its main competitor. It is rumored that News Corporation paid $16 million for both the TimesLedger and Courier-Life newspaper groups. The TimesLedger publishes 16 weekly newspapers in Queens and Courier-Life publishes 11Brooklyn newspapers.
Neither the editorial staffs nor the content will change but there has been no decision made as to whether the other deparments such as advertising or circulation will be merged with The Post's to reduce operating costs.
