Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) just might be spreading "inaccurate and misleading" information about climate change even going so far as to finance groups that mislead the public, according to this NYTimes.com article quoting the Royal Society, a British scientific group.
This 1,400 member organization dates back to the 1600's counting Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein as former members. They recently asked Exxon to stop financing these groups and to change its public reports to reflect more accurate information more in line with opinions of scientists.
The group contends that thousands of scientists agree that climate change is due to greenhouse gases and that the very few who disagree are considered contrarians and that lobbying groups seek these few out to use as 'experts.'
Exxon's rebuttal states that the Royal Society is unfairly describing their company and that they are well aware that carbon emissions are one of the factors that contribute to climate change.

Exxon Mobil stated: "We know that carbon emissions are one of the factors that contribute to climate change - we don't debate or dispute this".
Carbon dioxide released by man near ground level is heavier than air and sinks in air rather than rising up to the upper atmosphere to become a so-called greenhouse gas. While sinking, it stratifies from air. After sinking and stratifying, it tends to remain close to the ground and may find its way down to low-lying water bodies or down to ocean level where it can react with water to form weak carbonic acid. Carbon dioxide is also removed from the lower atmosphere by rainfall.
