And no not Amazon.com THE Amazon. Intel Corp.'s (INTC) chairman Craig Barrett traveled to an isolated Amazon River island city to launch a wireless network high-speed Internet access to a place where even electricity is hard to come by.
Of course, you can't get reliable WiFi service in your home but what the heck right? The tower, which is equipped with satellite and long-range wireless transmitters that will relay the signal to five locations in the city of Parintins, is making availability to the Internet a reality for students, teachers and doctors for the very first time.
The tower is outfitted with a new wireless standard, WiMax, a cousin of the Wi-Fi technology used to transmit Internet access over short distances, such as those within an office, hotel, or home. WiMax is well suited for use over long distances and for remote areas that don't have the infastructure of services we all take for granted such as telephone, cable TV and power lines.
