Patricia C. Dunn, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) chairwoman, has stated that she has no intention of resigning but would do so if asked according to this NYTimes article.
The investigation that dug up the phone records of company directors and journalists was ordered by Ms. Dunn in an attempt to find the source of leaks to the news media over the events leading up to the removal of then Hewlett-Packard chairwoman and CEO Carleton S. Fiorina.
The investigators are thought to have used questionable, if not illegal, tactics called pretexting, which essentially involves posing as other people to get those people's phone records.
A number of unanswered questions remain, most notably the identity of the private investigators that Hewlett-Packard used. The company has said that a confidentiality agreement prevents it from releasing the names, though the state prosecutors said the company had been “very cooperative.”
