Google Inc. (GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) are among the groups participating in the effort to rid the Internet of child pornography by cooperating with a program that reports these sites to the service provider wherein they will take down the sites or will block their subscribers' access using filters.
Other groups are U.S. Internet Provider Association, TimeWarner Inc. (TWX) owned AOL, EarthLink Inc. (ELNK) and Untied Online Inc. (UNTD). These companies, along with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, are part of the battle against the spread of child pornography and an initiative to allow for the shutdown or blocking of sites offering illicit images of minors.
To date only cases that were under criminal investigation would be shut down but an inquiry this year by the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, revealed an agressive effort in Britain to shut or block access to indentified sites.
That effort was run by the Internet Watch Foundation and resulted in a major decline in the percentage of child pornography sites based in Britain.
