If talks between Carlos Ghosn, who runs Renault of France and Nissan Motors (NSANF.PK) of Japan, and General Motors Corporation (GM) fail, Ford Motor Co. (F) might be the North American partner that steps up to the plate.
The looked for alliance with GM is still a viable option with Ghosn and Rick Wagoner, G.M.'s chief executive, meeting for the first time since their companies began 90 days of negotiations in July. They have no plans to conclude discussions before the self-imposed deadline of Oct. 14.
The talks began at the urging of G.M.'s biggest shareholder, Kirk Kerkorian. Ghosn believes a North American partner "makes sense" for the Renault-Nissan alliance, as quoted in this NYTimes.com article.
