
Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) launched a video download service Thursday, named Amazon Unbox, which will offer thousands of television shows, movies and other videos. More than 30 studios and networks will be represented.
This announcement puts to rest all the speculation that the Internet retailer would be getting into the online TV and movie business, according to this MSNBC.com article.
Movie costs will range between $7.99 to $14.99, as well as being offered for rent at $3.99 and TV shows will cost $1.99 per episode. The participating networks are CBS Corporation (CBS-A), Fox, MTV, Nickelodeon, PBS, BBC, A&E, Discovery Channel, Comedy Central and the HIstory Channel, just to name a few. Noticeably absent were ABC and NBC.
Movie studios included are Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, and MGM. Absent from this list is Walt Disney Co. (DIS) the biggest shareholder is Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) who is days behind Amazon's announcement with their Apple's iTunes Music Store move download service.
