Google Inc. (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt is named to Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL)'s board of directors today, creating a link between two of Silicon Valley's most prized companies moving towards a toppling of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), as Newsweek.com likes to see it.
This is Apple's eighth director and Schmidt comes on board during a stock option scandal that has raised questions about the board's oversight of past compensation practices that has Apple facing the possibility of a de-listing from the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.
A former CEO, Steve Jobs, returned stock options under review at Apple, before making any money on them. Jobs is currently a board member at Pixar, owned by Walt Disney Co. (DIS).
