
Alexander Kummant has been named president and chief executive by Amtrak's board of directores. He will assume the job Sept. 12 and will be replacing David L. Gunn, who was fired last November. Kummant is a veteran railroad and industrial executive, most recently the vice president and chief marketing officer of Komatsu America Corp.
Amtrak's top priorities include improving security and cutting costs. The company has debt of more than $3.5 million and its operating loss for 2005 topped $550 million, according to this WashingtonPost.com article.
