Part I of Breaking into the World of Fashion told the story of sisters that were bucking the odds of getting your foot in the door of the fashion biz. Part II followed the Beckerman sisters and the creative process and why each new design is an artistic and financial risk.
Part III delves into how the sisters handle budgeting and marketing for their fashion label, chronicled in this Newsweek.com article. They also learn why making the right connections is almost as important as making great clothes.
For the Beckermans, one of the most difficult aspects of running their business is, well, business. "We learned that the first five years are critical," says Cailli. Budgeting and marketing hardly appeal to the right-brained Beckermans, but without those skills, she says, "It's not a functioning business." The sisters draw often on the small-business courses Sam and Cailli took while in school at FIT. "[Sam] may be a visionary in the sense that her head is in that castle in the sky creating things 24/7, but her feet are firmly planted on the ground," says Goldstein, who taught Sam in another class, adding: "You can tell the student who is an entrepreneur. The Beckermans just were, from day one. They came in with the attitude that they were going to learn as much as they possibly could, and then launch their business."
