ABC television hit the Internet with a two-month experiment into streaming shows. The numbers, according to this WashingtonPost.com article. have ABC's parent company, Walt Disney Co., encouraged that viewers are willing to watch advertising online in exchange for free programming.
Don't get me wrong but isn't TV such as ABC already free? Granted the commercials can be annoying and excessive but the shows--"Lost," "Desperate Housewives," "Commander in Chief" and "Alias"-- can all be watched via the Internet with a promise of limited commercial interruptions, and those are restricted to one sponsor per show. Some of the advertisers in the lineup are AT&T Inc., Cingular Wireless LLC, Ford Motor Co. and Universal Pictures.
The test period was successful enough to have the network decide to bring back the service to coincide with the television season's start in September. To put the online numbers in perspective, "Lost" received the highest television ratings of the four ABC shows offered on the Internet, averaging about 15 million viewers a week in the recently completed season.
